Christina Cunningham, Resident in Counseling

Hi I’m Christina and I’m a Resident in Counseling! I graduated from Lynchburg College with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and then completed my education with a master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Virginia Tech. Through my counseling experience I have worked with young adults and older adults. As a counselor I strive to provide a safe space for my clients to open up and begin their healing journey at their own pace. I believe that my clients are the experts and have everything within them to heal and that I am here to empower and help facilitate growth through building strengths my clients already have.

I have experience working with clients who are struggling with life transitions, their identity, role confusion, grief, anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, relationships struggles, and family relationships. I mainly operate from a person-centered approach, and through this I focus on meeting my clients where they are currently and walk along with them to meet their goals. Adlerian is another approach I use where I look at how past experiences are currently affecting my clients lifestyle and relationships. I also often use Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) to combat negative thought patterns and beliefs. In addition, I am trained in Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, which focuses on helping clients heal from trauma and other distressing life events.

Outside of counseling I love going for walks with my dog and reading a good book! I enjoy baking, spending time with friends/family, and a good thunderstorm!
