Debbie Kleinsmith, Psy.D

Forest Location

I received my bachelor’s degree from Rutgers University, then studied at Florida Institute of Technology, where I received a doctorate degree in Clinical Psychology.  I worked in inpatient and residential settings in the Richmond area for several years, and at Centra Health as a therapist for Bridges Treatment Center and at Sweet Briar College.

After taking time off to raise my own two children, I spent 7 years working in the role of Director of Development for Girls on the Run of Central Virginia, a program that teaches valuable life skills and empowers young girls to strengthen their physical and emotional health.  This led to a passion to working with a primarily female population at Empower Counseling and I have been happy to be a part of this practice since 2017.

I enjoy working with individuals, couples and families who are looking for a supportive and goal directed therapist with a collaborative approach to change. My areas of expertise include anxiety disorders, depression, adjustment disorders and trauma.  I utilize cognitive behavioral techniques, positive psychology, solution focused techniques, mindfulness skills, and EMDR to help clients heal and reach their full potential. My goal is to help my clients become a more confident and empowered version of themselves, build on their strengths and work through the challenges and conflicts that are an inevitable part of life.
